Which Are Better? Three Tab or Architectural

Three tab Shingles are what most of your older roofs are covered with.

Roofing Shingles

The difference between three tab and architecturral shingles and which are better is a question that you need to know when your roof is about to be replaced. The differences are in the appearance and performance.

Difference Between Architectural Shingles and 3-Tab

Architectural shingles are constructed with a heavier base mat with multiple layers of material are adhered to. This gives the it a layered or three dimensional look. Compared to the standard three tab shingle that contains a flat layer with no dimensional thickness. Typically architectural shingles weight almost 25% more than the standard 3 tab shingles.

Roofing Cost

Today laminated shingles are available in many different warranty lengths from 25 to 50 years. Typically, thecost of architectural shingles  is only about 10% more than the traditional 3 tab shingles. Some of the higher end 50 year products can be as much as twice as expensive to buy. One option to consider is the increased value of your home. Laminated shingles help raise the curb appeal of a home and make it more valuable in an appraisal.

I prefer architectural shingles and highly recommend them. They have the look and last alot longer than your average 3 tab shingle. It’s likely that in the coming years standard three tab shingles will begin to fade away in the market as demand for laminated shingles increases.
